When the Herndon Building in the #SweetAuburn District of Atlanta was badly damaged by storms in 2008, it had to be torn down. The demolition revealed this advertisement for Gold Dust Washing Powder high up on the side of the adjacent building. It had been hidden since 1926 when the Herndon Building was built. The twin characters you see here, Goldie and Dustie, were the 'faces' of Gold Dust products for years before the brand died in the 50s. It's like a time capsule in this area rich with important cultural history. Note that this surviving building, at 229 Auburn Ave, was the first headquarters for the Atlanta Life Insurance, founded by Alonzo Herndon, one of Atlanta's early black entrepreneurs. He was extraordinarily successful by any standard, but especially considering he built his businesses during the hey-day of the Jim Crow south. 229 Auburn is in terrible condition and may be demolished in the not too distant future as well.
